Legal fight against AI-generated child pornography is complicated A legal scholar explains why
Adults looking at this abusive content need to be reminded that it is illegal, that the images they’re looking at are documentation of a crime being committed, and there is a real survivor being harmed from these images. ‘Self-generated’ material is something that has risen year on year and a trend we are constantly monitoring. We are now seeing much younger children appearing in this type of abuse imagery. For this reason, we took a closer look to provide an insight into what’s going on. The site, named Welcome to Video, was run from South Korea and had nearly eight terabytes of content involving child abuse – enough to store hundreds or even thousands of hours of video footage. More than 200 Australians have collectively paid more than $1.3 million to watch live streamed child sexual abuse filmed in the Philippines.
- Creating explicit pictures of children is illegal, even if they are generated using AI, and IWF analysts work with police forces and tech providers to remove and trace images they find online.
- Police have seized a list of about 20,000 members of the online porn video marketplace.
- Tlhako urged parents to monitor their children’s phone usage, and the social media platforms they are using.
- This issue was also raised by researcher Veriety McIntosh, an expert in virtual reality.
- Technology is woven into our everyday lives, and it is necessary in many ways even for young children.
There’s #NoSuchThing as child pornography
New job role identified as ‘pivotal’ in Cambridgeshire charity’s mission to tackle child child porn sexual abuse material online among growing threats such as AI generated imagery. At the NSPCC, we talk about child sexual abuse materials to ensure that we don’t minimise the impact of a very serious crime and accurately describe abuse materials for what they are. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline last year received about 4,700 reports of content involving AI technology — a small fraction of the more than 36 million total reports of suspected child sexual exploitation.

It may seem like the best solution is to restrict or remove access to digital media, but this can actually increase the risk of harm. A youth may then become more secretive about their digital media use, and they therefore may not reach out when something concerning or harmful happens. Instead, it’s crucial that children and youth have the tools and the education to navigate social media, the internet, and other digital media safely. See our guide for Keeping Children and Youth Safe Online to find tips on preparing for internet safety.

They may feel that this is a way for them to understand what they went through. Suspects were identified after crime agencies traced the site’s cryptocurrency transactions back to them. The site was “one of the first to offer sickening videos for sale using the cryptocurrency bitcoin,” the UK’s National Crime Agency said. One Australian alone spent almost $300,000 on live streamed material, the report found.
A report drawn up by SaferNet, an NGO active in promoting human rights online since 2005, found that 1.25 million users of the messaging app Telegram are in group chats or channels that sell and share images of child sexual abuse and pornographic material. One of these communities alone—which was still active when the survey was made—had 200 thousand users. Analysts upload URLs of webpages containing AI-generated child sexual abuse images to a list which is shared with the tech industry so it can block the sites. She told Sky News it is “easy and straightforward” now to produce AI-generated child sexual abuse images and then advertise and share them online. All ‘self-generated’ child sexual abuse imagery is horrific, and our analysts sadly see it every day, but seeing so many very young children in these images and videos is particularly distressing.
“The company are not doing enough to put in place the safeguards that prevent children exploiting the opportunity to generate money, but also for children to be exploited,” Mr Bailey says. In tweets advertising her OnlyFans account – some of which include teaser videos – people call her “beautiful” and “sexy”, and ask if she would meet up. It says its efforts to stop children accessing its site limits the likelihood of them being exposed to blackmail or exploitation, and if it is notified about these behaviours it takes swift action and disables accounts. “The company is not doing enough to put in place the safeguards that prevent children exploiting the opportunity to generate money, but also for children to be exploited.” DeMay’s father said adults have to be warned that their children will have access to the whole planet with a phone device. He says the device will give the children access to porn as well, and it’s the adult’s duty to monitor carefully.
